Horse Powered Reading (HPR) is partnering with horses, in ground work activities, to assist the student in integrating social-emotional learning with academics. Students see and experience reading with their entire mind, body and emotions by creating metaphors for the skills involved in reading. HPR is a form of experiential learning which focuses on the learning process for the individual. All sessions are tailored to individual needs. Partnering with the horse helps students externalize their reading challenges in order to explore and practice new skills or solutions in an emotionally safe space. HPR research has discovered that it only takes a few key reading skills combined with motivation, self-efficacy/confidence, persistence, all of which are taught by the horse, to create exponential growth in learning!
